From color trends to bedroom design trends, tile trends, and more, designers and home experts are using their expertise to give us the low-down on what we can expect to see in 2024. As an integral component of every home, lighting trends are not to be forgotten in that list.

We asked four interior design experts their opinions on the lighting trends that are set to illuminate our homes in 2024. From wabi-sabi-inspired designs to bold and sculptural fixtures, here’s what they had to say.

Chrome and Silver

Chrome and silver are set to make a comeback in various areas of interior design and lighting is no exception, says Heather Goerzen, lead interior designer at Havenly. These fresh and modern finishes are set to gain popularity in the New Year, edging out competitors like brass, matte black, and gold which have dominated the industry over the past several years.

“I love the slightly retro, 1970s-inspired look this material offers, particularly when it comes to ultra-modern lighting,” Goerzen says.

Wabi-Sabi-Inspired Fixtures

Light fixtures made with natural materials that feature organic shapes and intriguing imperfections are set to be big in 2024, predicts Kathy Kuo, founder and CEO of Kathy Kuo Home.

She calls them “wabi-sabi-inspired”—a traditional Japanese aesthetic that appreciates the beauty of imperfections and accepts the natural cycle of life: the passage of time and the growth and decay that come with it. Think table lamps with teak and acacia wood bases that feature natural curves and imperfections, Kuo says.

Rudolph Diesel, a top London-based interior designer, agrees, and says that sculptural lighting featuring organic shapes will be big in the New Year.

“These dramatic pieces use branches, antlers, and [other] natural materials to create lighting which doubles as art,” Diesel says.

These types of fixtures are great as statement pieces and are sure to be great conversation starters.

High Polish Over Matte Finishes

Matte finishes have had their moment over the past several years, but Goerzen predicts that high polish fixtures will make a splash in 2024.

“Similar to the chrome and silver resurgence, this look feels a little retro 1970s in the best way possible,” Goerzen says. “Don’t be afraid of a little glam in 2024!”

Think shiny black fixtures, high polish silver and gold, and more.

Vintage and Retro Inspired

Designers agree that the vintage and retro-inspired trend that has been popular over the past couple of years is set to continue into 2024.

“In an effort to revive nostalgia and create timeless spaces, there is a current emphasis on lighting that is new but appears to be retro,” says Sara McDaniel, design expert and owner of Minden Stays.

This trend encapsulates everything from 1950s-inspired milk glass fixtures to industrial-looking Edison bulbs and vintage-inspired filament bulbs, and it’s not set to go anywhere anytime soon.

While you can always scour your local flea markets and thrift stores for actual vintage pieces, it is usually easiest (and safest) to opt for new pieces that are designed in the retro style.

Natural Materials

Another existing trend that is set to continue in the New Year is the use of natural materials in lighting fixtures. Think rattan, twine, leather, wood, and more.

“From rattan wall sconces to leather wrapped floor lamps, this addition of texture softens the look of lighting ‘hardware’,” Goerzen says.

It’s a great way to add some visual interest to a space, and designers agree that fixtures featuring natural materials will continue to be popular in 2024.

Bold, Sculptural Chandeliers

Last but certainly not least, bold and sculptural chandeliers will continue to be popular in the New Year. This trend has been on the rise over the past year and it’s not set to go anywhere soon. These striking fixtures are ideal for entryways and dining spaces where they create a dramatic focal point, says Diesel.

If the word “chandelier” has you picturing a traditional glass and metal candelabra-style piece, you may be happy to know that chandeliers come in endless different shapes, styles, colors, and designs (although we love a traditional chandelier too). To really nail the oversized and sculptural look, Diesel recommends looking for “unique, curved, abstract shapes or cascading tiers that will dramatically cast light around the room.”
